How to Tell if A Egg is Fertile
Candling your eggs is an older but successful method of learning whether your eggs are fertile. The process involves taking your eggs to a dark room and shining a bright light beneath the large end of the egg.
Fertile eggs will show a dark spot in the middle with spider-like veins surrounding them.
Infertile eggs will show just the yellow yolk without any signs of a growing embryo or veins.
Candling should be done multiple times throughout the incubation process to ensure proper egg health and growth. If there is progress slows or becomes stagnant, it is possible that the embryo has died.
Setting Up a Brooder
A brooder is your baby’s chick’s first home directly after your chick’s first hatch! It is imperative to their survival. Your brooder needs to have 3-4 square feet per chick, be warm and draft-free. It also needs to have a:
- Heat lamp: Keep the temperature 95 degrees Fahrenheit and decrease it each week by 5 degrees until it reaches a minimum of 55 degrees
- Warm bedding: Absorbent wood shavings
- Feeders
- Waters
