Building a Safe Chicken Coop

Everyone who raises chickens needs a safe and functioning chicken coop to house them. You can purchase a chicken coop for a pretty penny, or you can make a custom coop yourself,  affordably in your backyard. This article will discuss how easy, fun, and cost-effective it can be to build your chicken coop.

Location of Your Chicken Coop

Your outdoor chicken coop should be kept on high ground to avoid flooding and muddy water. Place your chicken coop closer to your home so that it deters predators. Keep your chicken coop out of direct sunlight and build a windbreaker if there is a storm or strong wind.

Coop Size

Many chicken breeds need at least three square feet of room in a coop per bird to thrive properly. However, never overcrowd your chicken coop because it can cause fights and sickness. Weaker birds are likely to get less food and suffer from peck wounds. In addition, overcrowding your chicken coop can cause a fecal matter build-up, increasing the chances of your chickens catching parasites.

Coop Material

We recommend plywood and iron fencing for your chicken coop. Plywood is affordable and durable. Use primer and paint to prolong your chicken coop.

Use strong iron fencing to protect your chicken coop from wild dogs, stray cats, raccoons, hawks, and coyotes. Ensure that there are no openings large enough for animals to get through. A tricky fox can ruin years of hard work.

Step 1: Measure Out Your Space

Cut your plywood and build a fence around where you want your chicken coop to be placed. Typically, they are shaped like a rectangle or square.

Step 2: Build a secure box-like room

Your chicken coop needs to be secure from all angles. This means it needs to have a roof, four sides, and a sturdy base. Do not be afraid to bury your fence deeper into the ground if you have burrowing predators in your area.

Step 3: Add the Shelter

Chicken coop shelters are typically built off the ground to keep them away from moisture and predators like snakes.

Step 4: Add the nesting boxes

These can be simple boxes filled with hay or nesting material. Each hen should have its own nesting box to avoid fighting.

What Hobbies Should I Try?

As adults, it is easy to forget about the things we used to love. From sports, to gardening, to arts and crafts, many adults are looking back to things they enjoyed as a child to entertain them today. Free time has sparked old interests. In fact, according to Aliza Sherman Risdahl, writer and entrepreneur, “The pandemic has forced me to be more isolated than ever before but also to rely on my extended family, and it's given me a chance to get to know them better. It has stripped me of most of my income," Risdahl said. "It has compounded the stress our family has been under due to a series of health scares over the last year and the resulting crippling expenses, but it also has reminded us of what is truly important: family and loved ones."

How Hobbies Reduce Stress

We all know how damaging stress can be. Not only can it cause an emotional impact, but a physical and mental effect as well. If left untreated chronic stress can lead to depression, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal diseases, or neurological disorders. Though it is natural to experience stress on a daily basis, stress that is triggered too often can be a serious problem. Thankfully there are several natural ways you can reduce stress levels and ease your mind.

Learning a new hobby helps you direct nervous energy into something creative or physical. Focusing your energy on something other than what stresses you will help you relax. When you’re having a good time and laughing your body releases endorphins. These chemicals naturally make you feel better and help you relieve your stress.
