If you have ever seen an off-road helmet and a standard motorcycle helmet, you might have noticed that they are shaped differently. Wearing the correct helmet for the kind of riding you're doing is essential, so it's worth learning the differences between off-road helmets and standard motorcycle helmets.
The differences between motocross and motorcycle helmets are very noticeable. Motocross helmets have large openings for goggles to protect from dust, extended chin guards, and a peak (some may refer it as visor) for sun protection. The differences exist because they are designed for different purposes. A standard motorcycle helmet is designed to protect the rider against noise, wind, and debris at high speeds. It also protects against high-speed impacts, so it requires comfortable padding, excellent aerodynamics, good noise reduction and a lot of protection. However, an off-road helmet is built for sport. It needs good airflow, and it needs to protect riders from rocks, mud, and other obstacles found in a natural environment.Off-road helmets have a pointed chin guard because it allows more airflow. Off-roading is intense, with constant twists and turns and hitting bumps making you sweat and breath heavier. With a more pronounced and extended chin guard, it is easier for you to breathe and for the hot air to exit the helmet, so it will not fog up your goggles.As for the design of the peak, it has 3 main purposes. First, the peak can block the sun from getting in your eyes. Second, it also can protect you from dirt and rocks kicked up by the rear wheel of the rider in front of you. However, when you are off-roading, you may be riding through a wooded area and it can be annoying and dangerous to have branches hitting the front of your helmet.
