Darker Color:

#1 Consider the Size.
The size of your area: To maximize shade, make sure the patio umbrella is larger that the area you want to cover. A good rule of thumb is that the umbrella should extend 2-2 1/2 feet beyond the edge of the area you wish to cover.
The diameter of the table hole/base tube: The most common pole size is 1 1/2" in diameter, however, it can vary, and some larger umbrellas can have a pole with a 2' diameter. Be sure check the size of your base or table to make sure the umbrella will fit.
2. Decide the frame material.
There are 3 different frame material: Metal, Wooden and Fiberglass.
Wooden pole:

Normally, an umbrella can be secured two ways: a table with a base or a stand. If you do not have a table for a patio umbrella, you can use a stand to secure the umbrella. However, please make sure the stand is heavy and sturdy enough to support the umbrella. Different sized umbrellas require different sized stands, a larger umbrella will require a heavier stand. If your umbrella is supported by a table, even if it looks sturdy, it still needs a base to secure it. A table alone will not give enough support for an umbrella on windy days. It may blow away and hit something or someone. You must have a base to give it additional support and hold it in place. A base that is used under a table does not need to be as heavy as a stand that is designed for a free-standing umbrella, because the table can provide some support.
You should determine the best way to secure your umbrella for your situation. It doesn't matter how which option you choose, just make sure your umbrella is fixed tightly and secured in place.
