AHR helmet guide: Why do Off-Road/Motocross helmets have an extended chin and peak?

If you have ever seen an off-road helmet and a standard motorcycle helmet, you might have noticed that they are shaped differently. Wearing the correct helmet for the kind of riding you're doing is essential, so it's worth learning the differences between off-road helmets and standard motorcycle helmets.
The differences between motocross and motorcycle helmets are very noticeable. Motocross helmets have large openings for goggles to protect from dust, extended chin guards, and a peak (some may refer it as visor) for sun protection. The differences exist because they are designed for different purposes. A standard motorcycle helmet is designed to protect the rider against noise, wind, and debris at high speeds. It also protects against high-speed impacts, so it requires comfortable padding, excellent aerodynamics, good noise reduction and a lot of protection. However, an off-road helmet is built for sport. It needs good airflow, and it needs to protect riders from rocks, mud, and other obstacles found in a natural environment.Off-road helmets have a pointed chin guard because it allows more airflow. Off-roading is intense, with constant twists and turns and hitting bumps making you sweat and breath heavier. With a more pronounced and extended chin guard, it is easier for you to breathe and for the hot air to exit the helmet, so it will not fog up your goggles.As for the design of the peak, it has 3 main purposes. First, the peak can block the sun from getting in your eyes. Second, it also can protect you from dirt and rocks kicked up by the rear wheel of the rider in front of you. Third, it can also help deflect branches when riding in the woods. Standard motorcycle helmets are designed for riders who ride on paved roads, so they do not have this problem. However, when you are off-roading, you may be riding through a wooded area and it can be annoying and dangerous to have branches hitting the front of your helmet.

Is AHR helmet DOT certified? Is DOT helmet good?

Yes, all our AHR helmets are DOT certified. As shown in the listing photos, each helmet has a small DOT sticker on the back. Some new riders may have heard of the DOT certification, but they may not understand why it is important, so we have provided an explanation below.
What is DOT?
DOT stands for the Department of Transportation. This organization set Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218 for motorcycle helmets. All helmets sold for use by motorcyclists in the United States are required to meet this standard. Helmets that meet the requirements of FMVSS 218 are considered 'DOT certified' and are given a DOT sticker. However, the Department of Transportation doesn't test the helmets directly. Instead, the DOT holds the helmet manufacturers responsible for testing their own helmets and adjusting to meet the standards. What to do to meet FMVSS 218? A helmet needs to pass 3 tests to meet FMVSS 218. First is the impact attenuation test. It includes dropping the helmet on different impact anvil (flat anvil and cylindrical penetrator anvil) from a pre-set height. It simulates a crash scenario, and the impact is measured using scientific tools under two separate crash tests. Second is the penetration test. The helmet is fixed to a base, then a sharp striker is dropped on the outer surface of the helmet. The test striker must not penetrate the helmet, otherwise it will not pass the test. Third is the retention strap test. For this test, the helmet retention straps are placed under a load in tension. The test starts with a load of 50lbs for 30 seconds. The load is then increased to 300lbs for 120 seconds. The strap test ensures it can hold the helmet in place in case of an accidentWhat does a DOT sticker look like? The DOT sticker contains the following wording and information: manufacturer and/or brand, DOT, FMVSS No. 218, CERTIFIEDAlthough the DOT certification is often considered as the most basic standard, it does certify that the helmet meets important safety standards. We recommend being sure that any helmets you purchase have this certification.

Helmet: How do you measure head size before choosing a helmet?

A tailor's tape is the best tool for measuring your head for a helmet. Wrap the tape around the thickest part of your head. For most people, this will be right above your ears, approximately half an inch above your eyebrows. Measure your head circumference.
