Peas and potatoes are typically grown in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day. Luckily for those of us in the United States, the weather works perfectly for growing these types of vegetables. Regardless of whether your yard is still full of snow, or too small to set up a garden you can still celebrate this tradition at home!
The Tools You Need
Growing potatoes and peas are actually easier than you think. You don’t need a ton of experience or plant knowledge to grow a full Irish garden! Here are a few simple tools that you need:

Special Care for Potato Plants
  1. Add more soil as your potato plants grow. Start by adding dirt to the base of the plant, forming it into a little hill. Do this for every four inches of new growth!
  2. Water your potato plant every 2-3 days. Stop watering when the leaves of the potato plants turn yellow.
  3. Wait 2-3 weeks for baby potatoes to harvest then another 4-6 weeks for larger potatoes.
Taking Your Plants Outside
Starting your vegetable garden is easier if you start it inside, give them specific, catered care, and grow strong roots.  If your garden starts to overflow and you think it’s time to move your vegetable garden outside! However, if you move them outside too quickly you run the risk of causing your plant shock which can eventually kill your plants. Here are a few tips on transferring plants to an outdoor environment.
Start off Small
Your plant is going to need some time adjusting to the outdoor environment. While climates indoors generally stay the same, depending on where you live, the weather can change drastically in temperature. Take your plants out in the morning for just a few hours at a time, and increase the time each day throughout the week.
Keep Plants Shaded
Start your plants off with tapered sunlight. Strong sunlight can burn leaves and cause permanent damage.  Whether you place your plants under dappled sunlight beneath a tree or under an awning. Change your plant’s nesting spots as the sun changes direction throughout the day.
Shield your Plants from the Wind
Harsh winds can completely destroy your plants. Either place your place behind other plants, or in corners that break the wind.
